when a curved glass surface is placed in contact with a flat glass surface, a series of concentric rings is observed when illuminated from above with monochromatic light.  This is caused by the reflection of light from the surfaces, giving constructive and destructive interference.  This phenomena can be used to test whether or not a lens is properly ground.
